Architectural Technologist vs Architect
If you’re planning a building project in Sussex, including areas such as Brighton and Hove, you may be considering whether to appoint an architect. For residential and small commercial work across the region, a CIAT-registered Architectural Technologist can offer a highly capable and cost-effective alternative to a traditional architect.
A Practical, Build-Focused Alternative to an Architect
Architects often concentrate on early-stage concept design, while an Architectural Technologist specialises in technical design, buildability, and delivery. This approach is particularly valuable on projects in Sussex, where planning policies, conservation areas, and local authority requirements can influence both design and construction.
Puzzle Architecture can provide all of the core services typically associated with an architect, including:
Design and feasibility advice
Planning applications and liaison with local authorities
Detailed Building Regulations drawings and technical information
Coordination with structural engineers and builders
For homeowners and developers across Sussex, including Brighton and Hove, this often results in the same level of professional input expected from an architect.
Local Knowledge That Supports Better Outcomes
Working on projects throughout Sussex, an Architectural Technologist develops a strong understanding of local planning policies, construction methods, and regional design expectations. Familiarity with conservation constraints and common site conditions helps reduce delays and supports smoother approvals and delivery.
Strong Technical & Regulatory Expertise
Unlike some architect-led services that rely on additional technical input later in the process, Architectural Technologists are trained specialists in:
Building Regulations compliance
Detailed construction drawings and specifications
Sustainability and energy efficiency
Health & safety and CDM regulations
This ensures clear, build-ready information from the outset.
Ideal for Residential and Small Commercial Projects
A CIAT-registered Architectural Technologist is well suited to:
House extensions and alterations
New-build homes
Conversions and refurbishments
Small commercial developments
For typical residential projects across Sussex, including Brighton and Hove, this level of service is directly comparable to that of an architect, with a strong focus on practical, deliverable solutions.
Regulated, Qualified & Professionally Accountable
Just like an architect, a CIAT-registered Architectural Technologist is professionally qualified, regulated, and required to maintain ongoing CPD and professional indemnity insurance. This provides confidence and reassurance throughout the project.
Working With or Instead of an Architect
Architectural Technologists often work alongside architects on larger or more complex schemes, or independently where a full architect-led service is not required. This flexible approach allows clients to appoint the right professional support for their specific project.
